Navigating the UAE’s new salary deadline for private sector

As the UAE continues to strengthen its regulatory framework, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) has introduced a definitive update to the Wage Protection System (WPS). Taking effect on June 1, 2026, the new regulation establishes a unified deadline for private-sector salary payments. For employers, understanding and adapting to this timeline is no longer a matter of best practice, but a critical compliance requirement.

The 1st of the month deadline & the 85% threshold

Under the new rules, wages for the previous month's work must be distributed through the WPS on the first day of each Gregorian month. A company is considered formally compliant if it successfully transfers at least 85% of the total wages due to its employees. This threshold pragmatically accounts for legally permitted deductions or withholdings. However, failure to meet this baseline by the deadline triggers an escalation.

Key updates

Here are the key updates and consequences related to the new salary deadline: Any processing after this date is a delayed payment. On
day two (2), MOHRE issues electronic warnings. By dayfive (5), work permit services are suspended. Administrative penalties and fines apply from day eleven (11). Continued delays prompt legal labor cases.

Strategic exemptions

The regulation includes strategic exemptions. Workers in litigation, reported as absconding, or on approved unpaid leave are excluded. Banks, places of worship, personnel paid overseas, and missions under three months are also exempt. This ensures the framework targets standard
employment without disrupting special cases.
